ICAN University provides specialized certificate programs that prepare students with the professional skills and knowledge recognized by the American Library Association (ALA) and the Society of American Archivists (SAA). Each certificate track is rooted in the rich legacy and community-driven practices of African American archives, libraries, and museums. Beginning with the 2026–2027 academic year, new courses will be introduced under each certificate track to expand learning opportunities and respond to evolving practices in the field.
ICAN University courses align with recognized professional standards set forth by the Society of American Archivists (SAA) and the American Library Association (ALA). Students who complete our programs develop skills in:
Archival preservation and description
Digital archives management
Community-centered archival engagement
Cultural competency in librarianship and archives
Ethical and equitable information services
All ICAN University courses are delivered through the Canvas learning management system, providing an interactive, accessible, and student‑centered online learning experience.

This 3-credit course explores the foundations of African American community archiving, emphasizing the role of storytelling, memory, and place in preserving Black history. Students will examine case studies, archival methodologies, and community-led initiatives that challenge traditional archival practices.
You will learn to:
Understand the principles of community-based archiving.
Analyze the cultural and historical significance of African American archives.
Apply theory to real-world community archiving projects.

*BGLAM Certificate Track
BGLAM 3-credit course introduces students to the unique history, challenges, and innovations within Black cultural institutions. The course addresses the role of Black-led galleries, libraries, archives, and museums in safeguarding cultural heritage and fostering community engagement.
You will learn to:
Identify the historical development of BGLAM institutions.
Explore the leadership, programming, and advocacy strategies that sustain them.
Develop skills for working within and supporting BGLAM spaces.

This introductory short survey 1-credit course examines the history of African American visual art from the colonial era to the present day. Students will study influential artists, artistic movements, and cultural contexts that shaped Black visual expression.
You will learn to:
Recognize key periods and figures in African American art history.
Understand the relationship between art, identity, and social change.
Analyze works of art through historical and cultural lenses.
